CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Dec 7, 2025 (BSS) - A new phase of Indian onion imports through the Sonamasjid land port began today, with 60 tons entering the country on the opening day, according to port authorities.
Port officials said Indian trucks carrying the onions arrived on Sunday afternoon. Of the total import, M/S Gaur International brought in 30 tons, while Welcome Traders imported another 30 tons.
Panama Port Manager Md. Mainul Islam said the onion-laden trucks entered the port smoothly, and unloading operations are progressing quickly. He added that daily imports would be feasible if importers continue to open LCs regularly.
Importers and workers expressed optimism, noting that the resumption of onion imports after a long pause is likely to help stabilize supply in the local market.
Meanwhile, activity at the Sonamasjid Port has picked up again following the reopening of onion imports. Traders hope that consistent imports will contribute to bringing onion prices under control in the domestic market.
