
RAJSHAHI, Nov 1, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a discussion here today said effective and vibrant cooperatives are vital for improving living standards and strengthening the economy in both urban and rural areas.
They stressed infusing dynamism into the cooperative movement to help free the nation from poverty and hunger.
The Department of Cooperatives organised the event at the Shilpakala Academy Auditorium in the city, marking the 54th National Cooperatives Day-2025 observed under the theme "Cooperatives will build the country through equality and justice" ("Sammo O Somotay, Desh Gorbe Somobay").
Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Khondoker Azim Ahmed attended as chief guest, while DIG of Police Dr Muhammad Shahjahan, RMP Commissioner Muhammad Abu Sufian, and Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhter were special guests. Joint Registrar of the Cooperative Department Mukhlesur Rahman presided over the meeting.
A documentary showcasing cooperative achievements was screened before the discussion.
Commissioner Azim Ahmed said the cooperative movement can accelerate national development and help achieve the spirit of the Liberation War through social security and equality.
Dr Shahjahan highlighted the need for youth training to create skilled human resources and reduce unemployment, noting that rural communities are already benefiting from cooperatives in poverty reduction and self-reliance.
Three cooperative members were awarded for their outstanding contributions. The event concluded with cultural performances by local artists.
