NHF to launch congenital heart disease unit in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Nov 29, 2025 (BSS) - National Heart Foundation (NHF) has taken an initiative to introduce a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) unit in Rajshahi to ensure quicker and improved treatment for children suffering from congenital heart defects.

Introductory activities for launching the CHD unit are expected to be completed within the next six months at the 100-bed NHF Hospital and Research Institute (NHFHRI) in Rajshahi.

The information was disclosed at the NHF annual general meeting held at the hospital on Friday.

Presided over by NHF President Dr Abdul Mannan, the meeting was addressed by General Secretary Khondoker Mijanur Rahman, Treasurer Monwar Hossain Selim and Executive Member Enamul Haque. 

NHF Vice-President Hassen Ali and Life Members Mijanur Rahman Minu, Mosaddique Hossain Bulbul, Emdadul Haque Azad and Liakat Ali also spoke at the event.

Prof Roish Uddin, Chief Consultant and Director of NHFHRI, highlighted the improved services at the institute and the importance of the proposed CHD unit. 

He said children with CHD in Rajshahi and surrounding districts will receive faster and better treatment once the unit becomes operational.

The meeting was informed that the five-storey NHFHRI building, established in 2018, currently offers advanced services in cardiology, cardiac surgery, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU). 

Prof Roish Uddin added that further initiatives are underway to introduce modern technology, expand skilled manpower and add specialized ambulances to strengthen cardiac care in the coming years.
