Discussion meeting held in Khulna marking World No Tobacco Day

KHULNA, June 9, 2026 (BSS)- A discussion meeting on creating awareness of passive smoking was held here today marking World No Tobacco Day at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

The theme for this year was, "Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products."

The programme was organised by the district administration with support from the National Tobacco Control Cell.

Speaking as the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner Hoore Jannat said passive smoking is often more harmful than direct smoking and stressed the need for raising awareness to protect people from the harmful effects of tobacco.

She urged young people not to be influenced by the inducements of tobacco companies and called for strict compliance with tobacco control laws to ensure a healthy environment for future generations.

Khulna Civil Surgeon Dr Mahfuza Khatun presided over the meeting while Additional District Magistrate Nurul Hai Mohammad Anas delivered the welcome speech.

Among others, officials from government and non-government organisations, law enforcement agencies and civil society representatives addressed the programme.

On the occasion, honours were awarded to Koyra Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Abdullah Al Baki and Assistant Commissioner Md Mehedi Hasan for their contributions to anti-tobacco enforcement activities.

Earlier, a colourful rally was brought out from Shaheed Hadis Park and concluded at the Deputy Commissioner's office after marching through different city streets.
