NARAYANGANJ, June 9, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has launched an eviction drive to reclaim government canals from illegal encroachment in Rupganj upazila of the district aiming to ease the long-standing waterlogging crisis affecting thousands of residents.

The operation began around 12:00 pm on Tuesday in the Barpa Shantinagar area under the supervision of Rupganj Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Marjanul Islam.

According to BWDB officials, approximately 7 kilometers of a 13-kilometer canal network constructed by the Water Development Board in Rupganj have been illegally occupied. At least 12 large organizations, along with several influential individuals, have allegedly built structures on the canal, obstructing natural water flow.

As a result, drainage systems become ineffective during the monsoon season, causing severe waterlogging in nearly 20 villages. Officials estimate that around 30,000 families have been suffering from the recurring problem for years.

Speaking during the eviction drive, BWDB Executive Engineer Shuvo Ahmed said the government has prioritized the recovery of encroached water bodies across the country.

“The Prime Minister has directed the restoration of encroached canals nationwide. In line with that directive, the Water Development Board has initiated this campaign to reclaim the canal. Our efforts will continue until the canal is completely freed from illegal occupation,” he said.

Executive Magistrate Marjanul Islam emphasized the administration’s commitment to resolving the area's waterlogging issues.

“We are determined to recover government canals and restore their natural flow to reduce public suffering. Such eviction drives will continue in the future,” he said.
