RANGAMATI, June 9, 2026 (BSS) - A Chittagong University (CU) student drowned while bathing in Kaptai Lake at the Baluchar tourist spot in Rangamati Sadar upazila this afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Intishar Hasnat Jimel, 22, a student of the university's International Relations Department. He was the son of Md Belal Uddin and Shahin Akhtar Nasrin of Pekua upazila in Cox's Bazar district. The family currently lives in the DOHS area of Chattogram city.

According to local sources, Jimel travelled to Rangamati from Chattogram with three friends for a recreational trip. In the afternoon, they visited the Baluchar area of Kaptai Lake by an engine-powered boat. While bathing in the lake, Jimel reportedly sank after entering deep water. As he was unable to swim, he could not be rescued immediately.

Upon receiving the information, a diving team from the Rangamati Fire Service rushed to the scene and recovered the body after an hour-long search operation.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Director of Rangamati Fire Service Newton Das told BSS that divers were deployed immediately after receiving reports of the drowning and successfully recovered the body from the lake.

Rangamati Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib said the body was later handed over to police and sent to Rangamati General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The body will be handed over to the victim's family following completion of the necessary legal procedures, he added.
