DHAKA, Nov 12, 2025 (BSS) - Sweden's Ambassador for Human Rights, Democracy and Rule of Law Irina Schoulgin-Nyoni is visiting Bangladesh to discuss key human rights issues, media freedom and the vital role of civil society in promoting democratic values.

During her visit from November 11-14, Ambassador Schoulgin-Nyoni is scheduled to meet with representatives of the interim government, civil society organizations, development partners, students, and media actors, focusing on strengthening cooperation on democracy, rule of law, and human rights protection, said a Swedish embassy's press release here today.

Sweden has long been committed to the global promotion and protection of human rights, reflected in the appointment of a dedicated ambassador to advocate for these values in bilateral and multilateral contexts.

Her mandate includes advancing Sweden's foreign policy priorities in gender equality, democracy, and accountability.

In Bangladesh, Sweden supports human rights initiatives through development cooperation, political dialogue, and partnerships with civil society, notably through programmes that empower women and girls, combat gender-based violence and promote education and sexual and reproductive health rights.

The visit also underscores Sweden's partnership with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which was reinforced after the July 2025 MoU establishing Bangladesh's first dedicated OHCHR Mission.

This collaboration focuses on promoting accountability, strengthening national institutions and protecting civic space.

Sweden's flexible funding has enabled OHCHR to maintain its presence and deliver concrete results, including support to the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances, which has documented nearly 200,000 cases.

Through this cooperation, Sweden and OHCHR continue to advance justice, gender equality, and inclusive governance, supporting the National Human Rights Commission, legal reforms, and the empowerment of youth and emerging civil society actors.
