50th anniversary of proclamation of independence of Timor-Leste celebrated

DHAKA, Nov 29, 2025 (BSS) – The 50th anniversary of Timor-Leste’s Proclamation of Independence has been celebrated in Dhaka highlighting the significance of the milestone and underscoring prospects for expanded bilateral cooperation following Timor-Leste’s recent accession to ASEAN as its 11th member.

A reception marking the anniversary was held at a city hotel on Friday evening hosted by Engr. Kutubuddin Ahmed, Honorary Consul of Timor-Leste to Bangladesh, said a press release here today. 

Adviser for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, and Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Dr. Asif Nazrul,   attended as the Chief Guest. 
In his remarks, the adviser praised the historic struggle and resilience of the Timorese people and lauded the country’s democratic progress and growing engagement in South Asia.

The event brought together diplomats, senior government officials, military officers, academicians, business leaders and friends of both nations, reflecting the warm and longstanding ties between Bangladesh and Timor-Leste.

Timor-Leste foreign ministry’s Director General Ambassador Jorge Camoes and Director Emanuel Tilman, were present. 

Both of them expressed appreciation for Bangladesh’s longstanding support, particularly in peacekeeping, governance, training and capacity-building.

In his welcome remarks, Engr. Kutubuddin Ahmed underscored the significance of Timor-Leste’s 50-year independence milestone. 

He highlighted the country’s achievement in becoming ASEAN’s 11th member state in October 2025, noting that the development opens new avenues for enhanced regional and bilateral cooperation.

He stressed the potential for expanding collaboration in trade, investment, skills development, diplomacy and people-to-people exchanges between Bangladesh and Timor-Leste.

The event concluded with cultural performances, celebrating the enduring friendship and shared aspirations of the two nations.
