
DHAKA, Dec 2, 2025 (BSS) - The 28th anniversary of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Accord was observed in the capital today, with CHT Affairs Adviser Supradip Chakma extending greetings and congratulations to the people of the region.
Speaking as chief guest at a seminar titled "The Chittagong Hill Tracts Accord: Transforming Harmony into Prosperity" at the CHT Complex Auditorium on Bailey Road here, he said the accord is not merely a political understanding but a commitment rooted in peace, coexistence and justice under the country's constitution.
Notably, Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) signed the peace deal with the then government on December 2, 1997.
Adviser Supradip however termed the accord a positive understanding between the government and the CHT people.
He also stressed the need for elected chairmen of CHT through public voting.
He highlighted the urgency of framing necessary laws and regulations for departments already transferred to the district councils.
Supradip Chakma said modern e-learning facilities are being expanded to remote areas and as part of it, a total of 105,000 solar panels have already been distributed, with more required.
He expressed interest in implementing "social policing" and regretted the absence of discussions on negotiation in the Hill Tracts.
Presiding over the seminar, CHT Affairs Ministry Secretary Md. Abdul Khaleque said preparations are underway to move toward holding proper elections in the three district councils and stressed the need for environmental conservation under a proposed master plan.
Additional Secretary Md. Monirul Islam presented the keynote paper, showcasing progress since the accord, including a 1,080 percent rise in government budget allocations.
Additional Secretary Dr. Rashida Ferdous, Regional Council Member Gautam Kumar Chakma and other dignitaries also spoke.
