DINAJPUR, Dec 7, 2025 (BSS) – Onion prices in Dinajpur have started to decline following the commerce ministry’s approval of onion imports from India, aimed at stabilising the market and keeping prices within a tolerable range.
Md Shakhawat Hossain Shilpi, President of the Hili Land Port Importers-Exporters Association (Dinajpur), confirmed the news this morning.
The commerce ministry is granting limited approval for onion imports from India starting today to help keep the essential cooking ingredient stable in the local market, he said.
Each day, 50 import permissions (IPs) will be issued through the Hili customs department, with each IP allowing the import of 30 tonnes of onions.
The information was revealed in a press release jointly issued by the Agriculture and Commerce ministries on Saturday.
The release said that permission for limited-scale onion imports has been granted from December 7 in an effort to keep prices at a tolerable level.
Hili Land Port Official Md. Yusuf Ali said that only those importers who had applied for permission to import onions from India between August 1 and now will be allowed to resubmit their applications. In addition, each importer will be allowed to apply only once.
At least 50 importers, as per the previous import permission, have so far received permission to import 4,000 tonnes of onions, said the official.
The onion consignments of these importers are likely to enter the country through Hili land port by this afternoon.
Yusuf Ali said the onion import from India will continue to keep prices stable until further notice.
The price of onions has fallen to Tk 100 per kg from Tk 120 on Saturday after news spread about the import of onions from India, said Sirajul Islam, a wholesaler at the Hili land port wholesale market.
Another trader, Anil Chandra Roy, said, “The price of the commodity would fall further if imports from India continue.”
