BGB, police bust fake currency rings; nearly Tk 52 lakh seized

DHAKA, May 24, 2026 (BSS) - In separate anti-counterfeit operations ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police recovered over Tk 51.98 lakh in fake currency notes and arrested four alleged members of counterfeit money syndicates.

In Cox's Bazar's Teknaf, BGB raided a clandestine counterfeit currency factory in the Jadimura area under Hnila Union and arrested two suspects - Azizur Rahman and Nazmul.

During the operation, BGB seized fake notes worth Tk 51,34,100, along with laptops, computers, color printers, currency-cutting machines, raw materials used for printing counterfeit notes, and an auto-rickshaw allegedly used for transportation.

According to BGB, the counterfeit notes were being prepared for circulation in cattle markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha and in Rohingya camps. 

The operation was conducted based on week-long intelligence surveillance and technical monitoring by Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB).

Meanwhile, in Dhaka, Sabujbagh Police arrested two more suspects - Sumon Mridha and Monowar Hossain - in separate raids in Sabujbagh and Jatrabari thana areas.

Police recovered counterfeit notes worth Tk 64,000, including Tk 1,000 and Tk 500 denomination bills.

Cases have been filed against the arrested individuals under the Special Powers Act.

Authorities said drives against counterfeit currency networks and organized crimes will continue.
