KHULNA, July 9, 2024 (BSS) - Mongla Port, the second largest seaport of the country, has earned Taka 319 crore revenue in the financial year 2023-24.
A total of Taka 302 crore revenue was collected in the financial year 2022-23 whereas Taka 319 crore revenue has been earned in the financial year 2023-24 which has increased by 28.55% in comparison to the previous financial year, Mongla Port Authority (MPA) officials said.
While talking to BSS, Md. Makruzzaman, deputy director of MPA said, a total of 827 ships arrived in 2022-23 FY whereas a record of 846 ships arrived in the 2023-24 FY, exceeded by 19 ships in comparison to the 2022-23 FY.
In the 2022-2023 FY, a total of 13,576 cars were imported while in the 2023-2024FY, 15,340 cars were imported meaning a total of 1,764 more cars were imported in the FY 2023-24, he said.
A total of 99.05 lakh metric tonnes of cargo was handled in FY 2022-23 whereas 108.68 lakh metric tonnes of cargo was handled in the financial year 2023-24, he said, adding that a total of 26,583 TEU containers were handled during FY 2022-23 while 31,044 TEU containers were handled in the financial year 2023-24.
He, however, said a total of 846 foreign commercial ships arrived here in the financial year 2023-24.
Contacted, Rear Admiral Shahin Rahman told BSS today, a total of 5 projects works including the modernization of waste and oil removal management, procurement of vessels for Mongla Port, dredging of the Inner Bar of Pashur channel, upgradation of Mongla Port, Construction of two incomplete jetties at Mongla Port (through PPP) are going on in full swing.
The MPA chief said, now Mongla Port is playing a vital role in the overall economic development of the South Western region and the country.
A large number of new mills and factories have been built surrounding the port and as a result business and trade have been expanded, he said adding that after completion of the five projects, the revenue will be increased in 2024-25 FY.
Under the efficient leadership and supervision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Mongla Port has become a smart and modern port, he added.
