Price fall in large-cap drives stocks down

DHAKA, Aug 31, 2026 (BSS) - Stocks today continued their losing streak as investors remained cautious amid persistent selling pressure, particularly in large-cap shares.

The DSEX, the broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), fell 16.2 points to settle at 5,614, extending the market's downward trend.

Despite intermittent recovery attempts by bargain hunters, selling pressure intensified in the latter half of the session, causing the market to lose momentum.

Market turnover also declined 7.9 percent to Tk 4.7 billion from Tk 5.2 billion in the previous session, reflecting subdued investor participation.

Textile stocks accounted for the highest share of turnover at 32.6 percent, followed by pharmaceuticals at 11.4 percent and banks at 10.7 percent.

Among sectors, Mutual Fund gained 0.8 percent, Services 0.6 percent and Ceramic 0.5 percent. Jute recorded the highest correction of 2.4 percent, followed by IT at 1.4 percent and Life Insurance at 0.9 percent.

Of the 395 issues traded, 125 advanced, 191 declined and 79 remained unchanged.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange also ended lower, with its CSCX and CASPI indices declining by 3.1 points and 21.7 points, respectively.
