KHULNA, Sept 18, 2025 (BSS) - Markets, shopping centres, malls, and stores in Khulna city are witnessing a huge rush of customers ahead of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community in the country.

Business owners are expecting a significant rise in sales compared to the last couple of years as shoppers throng various markets in preparation for the five-day festival, beginning on September 28.

The city's major shopping hubs-New Market, Borobazar, Nixon Market, Zalil Market, Khulna Shopping Complex, and the KDA Avenue area-have taken on a festive look, attracting buyers of all ages.

Fashion houses have introduced new collections, with many offering discounts. Local clothing brands' outlets remain packed with customers, as do cosmetic and footwear stores.

During a visit to several markets today, BSS correspondent found bustling scenes, with consumers purchasing saris, cosmetics, shoes, and other apparel in large numbers.

Alif Islam, owner of Aponjona at New Market, said the sales of Jamdani, Tant, and Katan saris have increased significantly this season. "We are also seeing high demand for three-pieces, Lehengas, and other popular garments," he added.

He noted that many people who could not travel to Kolkata for shopping due to visa delays are instead shopping locally, which has boosted sales this year.

Similar crowd scenes were observed at Shibbari intersection, Dakbangla intersection, Picture Palace, Railway Market, and Jalil Super Market.

According to traders, sarees and Salwar-Kameez are among the most sought-after items. Designed Katan and Silk sarees are drawing significant attention, with Jamdani sarees also in high demand.

Amiya Kumar Paul, a resident of Tutpara area, came to Boro Bazar with his wife Rekha Rani Paul for shopping. "We've bought saris and dresses for all our family members," Rekha said.

Delip Saha, owner of Chandrani at Zalil Market, said, "The average sale of sarees is quite good this time."

Ujjal Islam, owner of Bright Cosmetics at Picture Palace, said the sale of cosmetics is steady throughout the year but sees a notable increase during major festivals like Durga Puja.

Traditional markets such as Boro Bazar and Nixon Market have once again become vibrant with shoppers ahead of the Sharadiya Durga Puja.

The festival will begin on September 28 with Maha Shasthi and will end on October 2 with the immersion of idols on Bijoya Dashami.
