Two to die in Cumilla murder case

CUMILLA, Nov 25, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced two people to death and five others to life term imprisonment in a murder case in Chauddagram upazila of the district in 2013.


Judge of Additional Sessions Judge's Court-3 Sabrina Nargis delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. 


The death-row convicts are Zia Ullah, 28, son of Abdur Razzak of Derkota village in Chauddagram upazila and Jewel Rana, 29, son of Yakub Mia of the same area.


In addition, the defendants sentenced to life imprisonment are Qari Fazlul Haque, 23, Azad Rahman, 25, Abdul Quader, 27, Kabir Ahmed, 30, of Derkota village in Chauddagram and Saddam Hossain, 23, of Felna village of the upazila.


Convict Kabir Ahmed, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was present in the court while the other six accused are absconding. 


According to prosecution, on the evening of April 22, 2013, Zia Ullah alias Zia and his associates attacked and vandalized Anwar Hossain's shop due to previous dispute. When he resisted, they hacked and injured Anwar. At one stage, they poured petrol on his body and set him on fire. At that time, local people rescued him and took him first to the Upazila Health Complex and later to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.
 

When his condition deteriorated there, he was admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He later died there while undergoing treatment. 


The next day, on April 23, the deceased's father, Delwar Hossain, filed a case with Chauddagram Police Station, naming 13 people.

After the investigation of the case, a charge sheet was submitted to the court on December 29 of that year. Later, on August 26, 2014, District DB SI Zillur Rahman re-filed the charge sheet against 19 people on the court's orders. 


State lawyer Mominul Haque Bhuiyan said that after taking the testimonies of 11 out of 23 witnesses in the case, the judge prnounced the verdict.


Each of them was given a one-year suspended prison sentence in default of paying a fine of one lakh taka. In addition, 12 accused in the case's charge sheet were acquitted.
