SATKHIRA, Dec 7, 2025 (BSS) - The historic Satkhira Liberation Day was observed on Saturday with due dignity and various commemorative programmes, marking the district’s freedom from Pakistani occupation forces on December 7, 1971.
To mark the liberation day, the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Satkhira district unit organized an array of events including the hoisting of the national flag, rendition of the national anthem, a one-minute silence for the martyrs, a colorful procession, a discussion meeting, and tributes at local memorials.
Freedom fighters from across the district, along with their family members, participated in the daylong observances.
Bir Muktijoddha Md. Shahidul Islam, convener of the district unit of the Muktijoddha Sangsad, presided over the programmes.
Following the procession, a discussion was held at the auditorium of the Satkhira District Freedom Fighters’ Association, where several distinguished freedom fighters—including Rafiquzzaman Khokon, Mizanur Rahman, Kazi Riaz, Advocate Mustafa Nurul Alam, Zillur Karim, Mainul Islam Main and Santosh Kumar Das—shared their experiences and concerns.
The event was conducted by Shafiq Ahmed Mollah, convener of the Sadar Upazila Freedom Fighters’ Association.
Recalling episodes from the 1971 war in Satkhira, convener Shahidul Islam said that the anti-Pakistan movement intensified in the district after Abdur Razzak was shot dead during a procession on March 2.
Freedom fighters collected weapons from the treasury and funds and ornaments from the National Bank to support the war effort. He noted that on May 27, more than 200 Pakistani soldiers were killed and three freedom fighters embraced martyrdom in a major battle at the Bhomra border. Another 33 fighters were martyred in subsequent guerrilla operations.
