NARAIL, Dec 10, 2025 (BSS) - Narail Liberation Day was observed today with due dignity through various commemorative programmes organized by the district administration and local freedom fighters.

The day's events began at 9.30 am with the placing of wreaths at the Badyabhumi on the banks of the Chitra River near the District Judge's Court. At 10 am, wreaths were also placed at the mass grave located on the premises of the Water Development Board office, followed by a special prayer seeking eternal peace for the martyrs.

A discussion meeting was later held at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium. The meeting was chaired by Julia Sukayna, Deputy Director of the Local Government Branch of the District Commissioner's Office. Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Md. Asaduzzaman attended the meeting as the chief guest.

Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Rakibul Hasan, valiant freedom fighter Advocate S.A. Matin, and valiant freedom fighter Tabibar Rahman also addressed the programme.

Additional District Commissioner (General) Lincoln Bishwas, valiant freedom fighter Md. Ajibar Rahman, Narail Press Club Vice President Sultan Mahmud, SM Sultan Museum Curator Tandra Mukherjee, and people from various walks of life were present.

According to historical accounts shared during the event, Lohagara Police Station was liberated on December 8 and Kalia Police Station on December 9 during the 1971 Liberation War. On December 9, freedom fighters surrounded 40 Pakistani military personnel stationed at the Water Development Board bungalow and ordered them to surrender.

When the troops refused, the Mukti Bahini launched a coordinated attack, eventually forcing the Pakistani soldiers to capitulate. One Pakistani soldier was killed during the encounter, and the rest were taken into custody.

Despite the harsh winter cold, freedom fighters celebrated throughout the night, and at 1:15 am on December 10, Narail was officially declared free from Pakistani occupation-marking a historic moment that the district commemorates with pride each year.
