CHATTOGRAM, Dec 17, 2025 (BSS) – Emphasizing the need to introduce a city government system to ensure sustainable and effective development in mega cities in a coordinated manner, Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Dr. Shahadat Hossain today said that the CCC plans to involve eminent citizens to monitor development works, check irregularities, and ensure quality in their respective areas.

Delivering the concluding speech at the 2nd meeting of CCC’s City Level Coordination Committee (CLCC) – a multi-level civic platform – Mayor Dr. Shahadat said a crash program would soon be launched across all 41 wards of the CCC to tackle the growing mosquito menace, particularly Dengue and Chikungunya outbreaks.

The meeting was held this morning at CCC Bhavan in the Tiger Pass area, with CLCC President Dr. Shahadat Hossain in the chair.

Acting Chief Executive and Secretary of the CCC, Ashraful Amin, conducted the meeting and briefed attendees on development schemes undertaken by the CCC for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, as well as ongoing civic welfare initiatives in health, education, waterlogging, conservancy, holding tax revisions, and eviction drives against illegal encroachers.

The Mayor also said plans are underway to construct underground shopping malls to address the longstanding problem of floating hawkers in the city. Referring to similar facilities in many countries, he said four key locations – EPZ, Agrabad, Bhadderhat, and Sationa Road – have been primarily selected for the projects.

“A Chinese enterprise has expressed interest in constructing such underground markets, and we have held preliminary discussions with Chinese officials,” the Mayor informed the meeting.

He added that floating hawkers not only cause public inconvenience and traffic congestion but also threaten law and order due to their unplanned movements.

CLCC members praised the interim government and the CCC Mayor for their effective efforts in mitigating the city’s persistent waterlogging problems and launching anti-mosquito drives using USA-based larvicide BTI technology.

CLCC members, including Premier University VC Prof. S.M. Nasrul Quadir, former CCC councilors Neaz Md Khan and Md Tayeb, Chattogram Press Club President Zahidul Karim Kachi, Chattogram Metropolitan Union of Journalists President Mohammed Shah Nowaz, DAB Central leader Dr. Sarwar Alam, Kaniz Kawser Chowdhury, M.R. Manju, and Shahriar Khaled, among others, spoke at the meeting.
