BAGERHAT, Aug 11, 2026 (BSS) - An ambulance caught fire following a suspected gas cylinder leakage and the subsequent explosion at the premises of the 250-bed Bagerhat District Sadar Hospital today, burning eight motorcycles parked nearby.

The fire broke out near the hospital's main gate shortly after noon and quickly spread to the surrounding area. The ambulance driver was also injured in the incident. 

No casualties were reported yet among patients, doctors or hospital staff.

Eyewitnesses said the ambulance suddenly caught fire around noon. The blaze intensified within moments before its gas cylinder exploded, spreading the fire to motorcycles parked nearby.

On receiving the information, firefighters from Bagerhat Fire Service rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control within a short time.

Bagerhat Fire Service Deputy Director Md Saidurzzaman said they received information about the fire shortly after noon and reached the spot within 15 minutes brought the blaze under control.

Hospital Superintendent Asim Kumar Samaddar said the fire originated in an ambulance and spread to eight motorcycles parked near the hospital gate, some of which belonged to hospital staff.

Deputy Commissioner Golam Mohammad Baten confirming the matter said that necessary assured measures would be taken regarding the incident.

Bagerhat Red Crescent General Secretary Mahabur Rahman Tutul said said the exact cause of the gas leakage or cylinder explosion and the total extent of damage would be known after an investigation.
