ROME, Aug 5, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - The Italian government has released 100 million euros ($115 million) in aid to tackle damage caused by last week's earthquake in the Naples area, the civil protection minister said on Tuesday.

The 4.7-magnitude quake, which happened on Friday evening, was the strongest to hit the area in the last 40 years and forced some 700 people to evacuate their homes.

Twenty-six people were injured. Most of the affected buildings all of the evacuees came from Pozzuoli, west of the city.

Nello Musumeci told a news conference after a cabinet meeting that the money would go towards repairing damage. Firefighters have assessed that 395 homes were uninhabitable.

Of the 700 people evacuated, 568 have found new housing and 128 were still in hotels, the minister added.

The region is the site of Europe's largest volcanic crater and is home to frequent seismic activity. Friday's quake was followed by a night of lower-intensity aftershocks.
