RANGPUR, Aug 24, 2026 (BSS) – The two arrested accused have given confessional statements before Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Md Rafiqul Islam over the murder of four members of the same family. 

After recording their statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the court ordered the arrested accused, Mugdha Das, 23, son of Kanu Das, and Siddhartha Das, 19, son of Binoy Das, both from the city's Machhuapara area, to send to jail at 11:30 pm on Sunday.

Investigation Officer (IO) of the case and Inspector (Investigation) of Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station Milan Chatterjee confirmed the matter today.

Earlier, the two accused were produced before the court at around 5 pm that day.

He said, “Since they have admitted their responsibility, there was no need to take them on remand. They were later taken to jail in a prison van.”

The bodies of the four victims were recovered from their under-construction house in the Machhuapara area of the city at about 11 pm last Saturday.

The deceased were Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School; his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty Bhola, 50; daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25; and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam Chakraborty, 12.

After autopsies at the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue on Sunday evening, the bodies were handed over to their relatives.

Later that night, the bodies were cremated at the Dakhiganj crematorium in the city.

Meanwhile, Gopinath Chakraborty, elder brother of the deceased Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, filed a murder case against unknown persons with Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station on Sunday in connection with the murders.

A special DB police team of the RpMP, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty, arrested two suspected murderers, Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das, in separate raids in the city in the early hours of Sunday.

RpMP Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said, “The arrested persons confessed to committing the four murders one after another by wrapping towels around their necks when the teacher tried to stop them from consuming Yaba tablets on the roof of his house.”

“On Friday, when the road was empty during Friday prayers, they left the house,” the RpMP chief said.

A senior police officer told BSS that the investigation into the quadruple murder case is almost complete following the recovery of stolen ornaments and the confessional statements of the two accused before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Sunday night.
