Tk 200 cr proposed for research, blue economy development

SANGSAD BHABAN, June 11, 2026 (BSS) - The government has proposed an allocation of Tk 200 crore in the national budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 to strengthen scientific research, promote innovation and advance the country's blue economy.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury made the announcement while placing the proposed national budget in the Jatiya Sangsad here today.

He said research plays a vital role in driving technological progress and that there is no alternative to strengthening research capacity for innovation and development.

The minister noted that the government will continue providing financial support to researchers through the Science and Technology Fellowship Trust to ensure opportunities for high-quality research both at home and abroad.

He further said that, to harness the potential of the blue economy through basic scientific research, innovation, and sustainable management of marine resources, Tk 100 crore has been proposed for research and innovation activities and another Tk 100 crore for blue economy development, bringing the total allocation to Tk 200 crore in FY2026-27.
