DHAKA, Nov 18, 2024 (BSS)- Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Nahid Islam today said initiative would be taken to reform the media on the basis of the report of the Media Reform Commission.

Adviser Nahid said this in a meeting with a delegation of UNDP and UNESCO in his office at Posts and Telecommunications Division, according to a ministry press release.  

Nahid Islam, also Adviser of Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, said, media is one of the pillars of democracy and that is why Media Reform Commission has been formed by the interim government to ensure media freedom.
 
He added that based on the report of this reform commission, initiatives would be taken to reform all public and private media.

Member of the delegation and an international legal expert Professor Joan Barata Mir pointed out the decision of the interim government for repealing the Cyber Security Act saying it’s a good decision.

He expressed interest to cooperate with the media reform process of the interim government.

Nahid Islam said that more than 127 children were martyred in the July uprising, while thousands of children were injured, and sought cooperation of UNESCO and UNDP for their treatment and rehabilitation.

Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana said that the government is not imposing anything on media.

Mentioning that prevention of rumors and misinformation is a big challenge for the present government, she sought cooperation of UNESCO and UNDP to overcome the challenge.

When UNESCO's Head of Communication and Information Noor Jannat Prama wanted to know about labor rights and security of media workers, the advisor said the interim government is working on this issue with the highest priority.

ICT Policy Advisor Fayez Ahmad Taib, Professor of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University Dr Shamim Reza and senior officials of the ministry were present.
