DHAKA, Mar 8, 2025 (BSS) - Social Prevention Committee, a coordination of 67 women, human rights and development organizations, today demanded equal rights for women in all aspects including social, economic, political and decision-making process.  

They made the demand at a discussion programme held on the central Shaheed Minar premises in the capital this morning.

With the slogan "For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality and Empowerment", Social Prevention Committee organized the event to mark International Women's Day-2025.

Speakers at the programme demanded equal rights, opportunities with due respect, elimination of social and gender discrimination and justices to empower women across the country.

Addressing the discussion session, women rights activist Nilufa Begum said "Women face various challenges in our country. I am urging all levels of the people to ensure congenial atmosphere for womenfolk."

 "Women, particularly girl students participated in the July mass uprising last year. They played significant role in the July movement," she said adding, "We must show respect the women community as they are equally contributing to different sectors of development."

While speaking as president, Dr. Fouzia said the interim government has to take all necessary measures for smooth and safe movement of women.  

"From here we want to declare that we will change this social setting and ensure our rights and dignity. We will not bow down to any torture and discrimination."

Later, they announced 14-point demand including to ensure equal rights and dignity for women, to formulate anti-discrimination act for quick response, acknowledging women's and housekeepers' household works, increasing reserved seat for women in national parliament and formulating direct election system for those reserved seats, ensuring women's' participation in decision making process, implementing section no 90 of Public Representation Ordinance, implementing Pornography Control Act 2012, ensuring safety and rights of immigrant women labors, revising the marriage age of girls related sections from Child Marriage Prohibition Act - 2017 and ensuring equal wages for women.
