Babanpur village swells with crowds during Abu Sayeed's grave visit

RANGPUR, July 16, 2025 (BSS) - Babanpur village in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur had turned into a human ocean as people from all walks of life began visiting the grave of martyr Abu Sayeed at his birthplace on Wednesday morning.
 
On the first anniversary of Abu Sayeed's martyrdom and the July Martyr's Day 2025, an atmosphere of respect and reverence prevails in his village, Babanpur, as people commemorate his sacrifice today.
 
The nation pays heartfelt tribute to the national hero, who has become an endless source of inspiration and courage for the younger generation.
 
Babanpur village was waiting silently to pay tribute to one of its unmatched children. It was around 5:30 am today when the light of dawn had not yet fully spread, but people started arriving there to visit the grave of Abu Sayeed. 
 
On this day last year, Abu Sayeed, a brilliant student of the Department of English of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) was shot dead by the police during the anti-discrimination student movement in front of the university.
 
His death sparked the student movement in the country, which later paved the way for a change in the political landscape. 
 
Immediately after this incident, the entire country erupted in flames, which later paved the way for a change in the political landscape. 
 
As a result, Hasina later fled the country on August 5 and the nation gained its second independence by freeing the land from the fascist rule.
 
It was seen on the spot that Abu Sayeed's grave was bordered with grills on all four sides. Banners of various political parties were seen on the village streets in memory of martyred Abu Sayeed. 
 
BRUR Vice-chancellor, Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, different political parties and social organizations including BNP, Jamaat, NCP, Anti-discrimination Student Movement and many others paid their respects and visited the grave. 
 
The central and local leaders of all these political parties and other organisations arrived at Babanpur village, visited Abu Sayeed's grave, talked to his parents and enquired about their whereabouts on his first martyrdom anniversary today.
 
Many people took pictures with Abu Sayeed's father Md Mokbul Hossain, mother Monwara Begum and brothers Abu Hossain and Ramjan Ali and youngest sister Sumi Khatun and their relatives in their courtyard. 
 
A photo exhibition of their ongoing and planned development activities has been organized by the 'Shaheed Abu Sayeed Foundation' next to the grave of martyred Abu Sayeed.
 
At this time, the Babanpur area sparked with various slogans. 
 
Earlier in the morning, BRUR Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali with the teachers and officials of the university visited the grave of martyr Abu Sayeed in Babanpur village at 7:30 am.
 
After the grave visit, the Vice-chancellor while talking to reporters said, “Today is the first martyrdom anniversary of Abu Sayeed. On this occasion, we have come here to visit his grave and meet his family on behalf of our university". 
 
The contribution that Abu Sayeed has left for Bangladesh has been seen by the whole world. 
 
Abu Sayeed was a member of the university family. His supreme sacrifice has glorified the university nationally and internationally.
 
Various initiatives have been taken by Begum Rokeya University so that future generation could know that there was a talented and courageous student like Abu Sayeed at this university. 
 
"We want to remember Abu Sayeed," he said, adding that the BRUR has taken daylong programmes to observe the martyrdom anniversary of Abu Sayeed, the first martyr of the anti-discrimination movement, and the 'July Martyr's Day'-2025 today.
 
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal said, "Abu Sayeed was fighting against tyranny. This nation will remember him forever." 
 
"We will remember those who were martyred during the July uprising. We will stand by the martyrs' families. The journey to fulfill Abu Sayeed's dream has begun," he said.
