DHAKA, Oct 07, 2025 (BSS) - International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam today said a formal investigation has begun into the crimes committed by the Awami League as a party.

Speaking to reporters at the premises of the ICT, the Chief Prosecutor said the process of investigating the crimes committed by the Awami League as a party and as an organisation had been underway.

He said an investigation officer has already been appointed in this regard.

"They (probe agency) will complete the investigation as soon as possible and make their best efforts," he said, adding, "Upon receiving the investigation report, necessary steps will be taken to bring the Awami League to justice as a party."

When asked what kind of punishment could be imposed if the party's crimes were proved, the ICT chief prosecutor said the law clearly outlines the types of punishment that can be handed down to a political party.

"The law mentions options such as banning the party, imposing other forms of sanctions, seizing property, or issuing certain directives regarding its leaders and activists," he said.

"The investigation report must first be submitted, and the case must reach the trial stage. These issues will then be examined," the chief prosecutor added.

Replying to another query whether the probe would cover only the Awami League or also the parties under the 14-party alliance, Tajul Islam said the investigation has now started only against the Awami League as a party.

"If it is later deemed necessary that other parties were also involved in the crimes, our investigation agency will take appropriate measures accordingly," he said.
