DHAKA, Oct 7, 2025 (BSS) - The sacrifice of BUET student Abrar Fahad and the martyrs of the July uprising must serve as a guiding force for Bangladesh's youth, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam said today, calling for a renewed commitment to society, institutions, and the nation's moral values.
"If we truly wish to uphold the ideals for which Abrar and the martyrs of July laid down their lives-if we want to defeat imperialism, aggression, and neo-colonial domination-then we must prepare ourselves, our society, and our country," he said.
The adviser was addressing the memorial discussion and inauguration programme of 'Eight Pillars Against Aggression' monument which was rebuilt and inaugurated today at the Palashi intersection, six years after it was demolished by fascist forces.
The memument commemorates Abrar Fahad who was beaten to death by the now-banned Chhatra League men in 2019, and the martyrs of the July Uprising, symbolizing the nation's continued struggle against domination, aggression, and injustice.
Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam said Bangladesh's young generation stands as the nation's greatest source of strength and must now prepare to lead the country's next battles-against domination, aggression and all forms of injustice-with a renewed sense of national commitment and moral vision.
"Bangladesh and its young generation together embody a great festival of strength. We are a fighting nation-we have already won one battle. But the coming decades will bring new struggles that we must prepare for," he said.
Mahfuj Alam underscored the need for a shift in national thinking-from state-centered politics to social transformation. "Everyone talks about the state, but no one talks about building society. We must confront the crises within our social fabric, overcome identity politics and rebuild trust through collective work," he added.
Calling for institution-building both within and beyond the state, he urged young people to enhance their individual capacity and contribute to education, health, and research. "We must strengthen our personal and collective capabilities and build strong institutions of learning, healthcare and research. Our diaspora must also be part of this vision," he said.
He said the best tribute to the martyrs would be to translate their dreams into tangible realities. "Our truest tribute to the martyrs will be to realize their vision-to make the values of sovereignty, democracy and human dignity a living practice," he said.
The adviser also emphasized environmental and resource protection as integral to national sovereignty. "Protecting our rivers, forests and ports is now a national priority. Many, including Abrar, became martyrs for this cause. Their sacrifice should deepen our love and commitment to this land," he said.
Mahfuj Alam expressed his confidence in the leadership potential of Bangladesh's youth. "Bangladesh will undoubtedly provide global leadership-and that leadership will emerge from our youth, from within our own people," he said.
Marking Abrar's sixth martyrdom anniversary, the memorial was inaugurated by Abrar's father Barkat Ullah this afternoon at an event which was also graced by Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, adviser to the ministries of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and Youth and Sports.
National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossain, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Vice President (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) Md Abu Sadik Kayeem and Abrar Faiyaj, younger brother of Abrar Fahad were also present at the event, organized by Abrar Fahad Smriti Sangsad.
