DHAKA, Jan 26, 2026 (BSS) - The Election Commission (EC) has asked that complaints over violations of the electoral code of conduct against any candidate be filed directly with the concerned returning officers or Election Enquiry Committees (EEC) for quicker resolution.
EC Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said this today while briefing reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon area.
"Along with this, a copy of the complaint should be submitted to the EC," he added.
Akhtar Ahmed said, "If a complaint is filed with the Election Commission, it usually takes one to three days to reach through bureaucratic channels, during which time the importance of the complaint gradually diminishes."
He said if the same complaint is submitted directly to the EEC or the returning officers, it can be resolved more quickly. "There are 300 Electoral Inquiry Committees in 300 constituencies," he added.
Responding to a question about the complexity in getting postal ballots to the country on time, the EC senior secretary said there is no possibility of complications in this regard. He explained that the maximum time it may take is 13 to 14 days due to distance, and the commission has fixed deadlines for issuing, submitting and receiving postal ballots accordingly.
He said although the vote counting of the national elections and the referendum will be done separately, the two will go on simultaneously. "The counting of postal ballots may take a little longer," he added.
Akhtar Ahmed called upon all to be responsible from their own positions, so that the EC can conduct the upcoming elections in a fair, impartial and acceptable manner.
