Govt plans nationwide seamless, time-efficient railway network

DHAKA, June 16, 2026 (BSS) - The government has undertaken an initiative to develop a nationwide "seamless and time-efficient" railway communication system across Bangladesh.

The decision was taken at a meeting on railway management and future planning chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Public Administration Conference Room of the Cabinet Division in the Bangladesh Secretariat here this morning, said premier's Deputy Press Secretary Mostafa Zulfiquar Hasan (Hasan Shiplu).

"In this meeting, the medium and long-term plans of the railway were discussed in detail. Various plans have been taken, including the gradual conversion of metre-gauge railway lines from Panchagarh to Cox's Bazar into broad-gauge lines and the modernisation of the railway signaling system," he said.

Shiplu said the meeting also discussed how to finance the implementation of these plans.

Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Habibur Rashid, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Prime Minister's Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, Railways Secretary Md Fahimul Islam and Bangladesh Railway (BR) Director General Md Afzal Hossain were present at the meeting.
