DHAKA, July 16, 2026 (BSS) – Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today said the government does not want to ban any political party through an executive order; rather, it wants the fate of the Awami League (AL) to be decided through the legal process.
“In principle, we want the Awami League's fate as a political party to be decided through due process of law rather than through an executive order. This has been the BNP's longstanding position," he said while speaking to journalists on current issues at the Home Ministry at the Secretariat here.
Ahmed said the scope for trying the Awami League as a political party was created after amendments to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Act in line with Article 47 of the Constitution, allowing organisations to be prosecuted for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide.
“Previously, only individuals could be tried under the law. Now, organisations can also be prosecuted under the amended provisions," he said.
The minister said the government believes the Awami League is responsible for crimes against humanity and genocide committed during the July Mass Uprising and that the party must face trial following a proper investigation.
He said that once the investigation is completed and a charge sheet is submitted to the tribunal, the trial of the Awami League as a political party will begin, and the court will determine the party's fate.
