Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See pays courtesy call on FM

DHAKA, Feb 5, 2024 (BSS) - Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to Bangladesh Archbishop Kevin S. Randall congratulated Dr. Hasan Mahmud on his appointment as the Foreign Minister, during an introductory courtesy call this afternoon at the foreign ministry here.

During the meeting, Mahmud stated that Bangladesh is a country of peace, religious harmony, and secularism and reiterated the government's firm commitment to building a peaceful, inclusive and progressive nation.

Referring to the protracted Rohingya crisis, he sought support of the international community for a sustainable solution through a safe and sustainable return of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas, temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh, to their homeland, Myanmar, for the sake of peace and stability in the region.

The Foreign Minister hoped for a visit by His Holiness Pope Francis to Bangladesh again.

The Apostolic Nuncio informed about his visit to different parts of the country and expressed satisfaction over the unity existing among people of different faiths and communities in Bangladesh.

He referred His Holiness Pope Francis's call 'to all people of good will on the climate crisis' and 'artificial intelligence and peace' an appealed for Bangladesh's support for a global treaty against harmful application of artificial intelligence.

The Foreign Minister echoed that artificial intelligence must not be used for purposes that harm humanity.

The two sides also expressed concerns over the war in Gaza, particularly over the killing of innocent civilians and attacks on religious establishments.
