Govt put emphasis on peoples' welfare: Lawmakers

SANGSAD BHABAN, March 4, 2024 (BSS) - Treasury bench lawmakers today said the present government is working for welfare of the people while BNP is working for forging their own fate.

The present government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been  working relentlessly for development of the country and its people while BNP only think of their own fortune, said the lawmakers while taking part in general discussion on a thanksgiving motion on the President's speech in the House with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Lauding the role of the present government, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Rokeya Sultana said the health services have already reached the doorsteps of the poor people through community clinic while BNP had tried to create an unhealthy and jobless nation by closing these rural clinics during their last regime.

Terming community clinics as landmark in the health services, the state minister said the country has achieved tremendous success in reducing mother and children mortality rate.

Among around 10 million people where 80 percent of them are women who receive their necessary health services from the community clinics across the country, the state minister told the parliament.

The lawmaker, however, said the President in his 143-page speech projected the country's good governance, development of skilled youth forces, local government, development small indigenous people and the defence of the country.

Now the incumbent government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is giving topmost importance on agricultural production in line with the philosophy of Bangabandhu. The country's per capita income now reaches US$2500, said ASM Feroz MP of Patuakhali-2.

Criticizing the role of BNP, ASM Feroz said the present government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh, is working for welfare of the people in line with the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman while BNP had concentration on their own fate instead of the people’s welfare.

 

"Bangladesh is now become a role model of development under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while BNP, led by Tarique Rahman, creating impediment on the way of ongoing development", said senior ruling party leader Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya of Chandpur-2.

Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury said the overall national budget of the alliance government was Taka 66,836 crore in their last fiscal while the education budget of the present government in the current 2023-24 fiscal is Taka 88,162 crore which was Taka 20,000 crore more than the entire budget of the alliance government.

Sharply criticizing higher monetary and food inflation, Jatiya Party lawmaker Anisul Islam Mahmud of Chattogram-15 said, "The parliament must have to find out the reason behind the higher monetary and food inflation rate instead of drawing a good picture of development as country's monetary and food inflations exceed by 9.5 and over 12 percent which is not acceptable".

To make the present development sustainable, the opposition deputy leader said the government must have to establish good governance along with brining confidence on the judiciary.

Earlier, they paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his contribution to establishing an independent Bangladesh.
