Solar power attracts rural people for clean, sustainable energy: Nasrul Hamid

DHAKA, 20, 2024 (BSS)-State for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said that Bangladesh is successfully implementing Solar Home System (SHS) programme with special emphasis on innovation and resilience, as SHS attracted rural people for clean and sustainable energy sources.

“The solar home system programme not only lights of the house but also brings a light of hope to those who were previously in darkness,” he said this while paying a courtesy call with Germany Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development Dr Barbel Kofler in Berlin yesterday (Tuesday).

During the meeting they discussed various issues including mutual interest.

The state minster said the groundbreaking initiative has been attracting the rural communities to clean and sustainable energy sources, said adding, “At the same time, they are self-reliant by realizing their hopes and aspirations.”

“Bangladesh has announced its commitment to renewable energy and climate resilience through initiatives such as the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan. By leveraging global partnerships and resources, Bangladesh is committed to mitigate the effects of climate change,” he added.

Nasrul Hamid also said that the recent commissioning of a 60 MW onshore wind power project has marked a significant milestone in Bangladesh's progress in the clean energy.
 
“This achievement not only highlights Bangladesh's commitment to reduce its dependence on traditional energy sources but also shows its willingness to cooperate with developed countries including Germany in renewable energy,” he said.

Mentioning Germany's experience in the wind technology, which can make a special contribution to wind power in Bangladesh, he said coordinated efforts between Bangladesh and Germany in the renewable energy will have a positive impact.

The Parliamentary State Secretary of Germany expressed interest in the overall electricity and energy sector of Bangladesh and said that Germany will cooperate in the development of renewable energy in Bangladesh.
