Research to be increased to tackle climate-induced damages in agri sector: Shahid

DHAKA, April 16, 2024 (BSS) - Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdus Shahid today said research activities will be increased to tackle the climate-induced damages in agriculture sector.


"The agriculture sector of the country is being affected mostly due to global climate changes. Special importance has been given to invent climate change resistant crop varieties and technologies to deal with the loss," he said.


The minister said this while addressing a workshop - "Climate Action and Food System Transformation in South Asia" - organised by Michigan University and Farming Future at a city hotel.


Shahid said many successes have already been achieved by the country's agronomists. And research activities will be increased in future for tackling the damages in agriculture sector, he added.


He said agriculture scientists and the research centers are working cordially to produce needed food for the growing population.


Michigan University Senior Associate Dean Jorge Smith, Director of International Programme Karim Meyardia, Global Alliance for Science Executive Director Sheila Kaka Ochugboju and Farming Future CEO Arif Hossain, among others , addressed it with Emeritus Professor MA Sattar Mandal in the chair. Former agriculture secretary Anowar Faruque conducted it.
