Contempt of court rule issued against NBR chairman

Dhaka, June 12 2024 (BSS) - A High Court division bench has issued a ruling

on Tuesday seeking to know why disciplinary action should not be taken
against Abu Hena Mohammad Rahmatul Muneem, chairman of the National Board of
Revenue (NBR) for contempt of court.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Razik-al
Jalil passed the order.

According to the documents, a legal notice was sent to the NBR chairman for
not submitting a progress report following the High Court's directives passed
on November 8, 2020, to collect tax and VAT from social media as per the
relevant laws of Bangladesh.

Supreme Court lawyers Barrister Humayun Kabir (Pallab) and Barrister Md
Kausar mailed the warning notice on behalf of Law and Life Foundation Trust,
to the chairman of NBR on May 19 this year, after he disobeyed the judgment
and order of the High Court.

The notice said that if the instructions given by the High Court judgment are
not followed within 10 days, a case will be filed on the charge of contempt
of court.

Finally on June 5, a contempt of court case was filed against the Muneem as
he continued to keep a mum and didn't take any actions in this regard.
