Tarique’s PS Apu discharged from extortion case

DHAKA, March 4, 2025 (BSS) – A court here today discharged BNP acting chairman 
Tarique Rahman’s personal secretary (PS) Miah Nuruddin Apu from an extortion case 
filed in 2007.
 
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order, accepting a discharge 
petition filed for Apu.
 
Today was fixed for holding a hearing on charge framing in the case. The prosecution 
argued for framing charges against Apu, while his lawyer pleaded to discharge his client 
from the case. After hearing both parties, the court discharged Apu as it found no 
‘substantial materials’ to frame charges in the case.
 
The case was filed on March 8, 2007, with the Gulshan Police Station in the capital 
against Tarique Rahman and Miah Nuruddin Apu for demanding Taka one crore in 
extortion.
 
The High Court on October 23, 2024, scrapped the proceedings of the case against 
Tarique Rahman. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on January 5 upheld the 
judgment of the High Court.
