DHAKA, March 9, 2025 (BSS) – Dhaka University has been on the boil since Saturday night over the rising incidents of rape and violence against women, as students and teachers of the university under different banners burst into protests following the rape of an eight-year-old girl in Magura.

Hundreds of Dhaka University students, under the banner ‘Anti-Rape Platform,’ brought out a torchlight procession this evening, demanding capital punishment for perpetrators involved in rape incidents across the country.

Students under the platform, who emerged last night with a midnight procession, brought out a torchlight march from the foot of the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture this evening, which ended at the same venue after passing through key points of the university.

Earlier, over a thousand students under the platform marched from several dormitories to the Raju Memorial Sculpture at TSC on Saturday night, seeking the maximum punishment for rapists.

Meanwhile, a group of female students under the banner ‘Bangladesh Against Rape and Harassment’ brought out a bamboo-stick rally at Dhaka University, demanding the capital punishment for rapists, along with nine other demands.

Some university teachers also joined the rally, which marched through the key points of the campus and concluded with a rally at the foot of the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture.

In the morning, the University Teachers' Network, a platform for private and public university teachers, organized a human chain and protest rally at the foot of ‘Aparajeyo Bangla’ on the campus, protesting ongoing violence against women and demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits.

The university teachers urged the government to bring the culprits involved in violence and harassment against women to justice and ensure exemplary punishment for those responsible.

During this time, students from various departments of the university organized protest marches and human chains, chanting slogans against violence against women.

Throughout the day, students from various departments at Dhaka University staged demonstrations on campus, while students from at least 36 departments boycotted their classes and examinations as part of their ongoing protests, demanding the punishment of rapists.
