Truck driver arrested for crushing garment worker in Banani

DHAKA, Mar 11, 2025 (BSS) - The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested the truck driver who ran over the female garments workers in the Banani area of the capital on Monday morning.

A team of the Cyber and Special Crime unit of the DB through intelligence information and using modern technology arrested the truck driver Md Titon Islam, 36, from Kolatia area under Keraniganj upazila.

Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations Department) of DMP, Md Talebur Rahman confirmed the news of the arrest to media today.

Earlier, Minara Akhter, 19, a garment worker was killed and another worker Sumaya Akhter, 19, was injured when a speedy banana laden truck lost control and hit them while they were crossing the road around 7am in Banani yesterday.

Following the accident, several hundred agitated garment workers put barricade on the airport road till 1.30pm.

As a result, huge traffic congestion was created in Banani and its adjoining areas. Many people to and from Uttara, Banani and Mohakhali areas were stranded in those areas.

Lawful measures have been taken against the arrested truck driver.
