Prosecution accused 141 people for trial in ICT-BD

DHAKA, April 10, 2025 (BSS) – A total of 141 people were accused so far to be tried in Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) for their alleged crimes against humanity during the July-August Uprising in 2024 while 54 of them were in custody by now, prosecution lawyers said today.

“According to the latest statistics 339 complaints have been lodged in the tribunal . . . 141 people were accused in these cases,” ICT-BD’s chief prosecutor Mohammad Tazul Islam told a media briefing at his office.

He said 54 of the accused were arrested by now to face the trial in person while the rest 87 were on the run.

The chief prosecutor said investigations into charges against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, cases over burning of bodies at Ashulia, Chankharpul killings, shooting dead an man who was hanging on a carnish in Rapura nearly reached their final stage.

Tazul said investigations into 39 cases were underway.

He said some 1500 to 2000 people were martyred during the uprising when some 25,000 people and students were wounded.

“Visible evidences of the crimes are there. We will be able to prove the crimes in the tribunal and justice will be ensured by maintaining international standards,” the tribunal’s prosecution chief said.

The briefing was told that 17 lawyers were serving in the prosecution team while 24 police officers were appointed as investigators on deputation to carry on the enquiries.

ICT-BD prosecutors Abdus Sobhan Tarafdar, Mizanul Islam, Gazi MH Tamim, Abdullah Al Noman, Saimum Reza, Abdus Sattar Palawan and other were present during the briefing.
