BOGOTÁ, June 20, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - A fourth suspect has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attempted assassination of Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe, who remains in critical condition, prosecutors said Thursday.

Uribe, a 39-year-old conservative senator, was shot twice in the head and once in the leg by a 15-year-old suspected hitman while giving a campaign speech on June 7.

Doctors said Monday after an emergency operation to stop internal bleeding that his condition was "extremely critical."

Prosecutors refused to say how they believed the latest suspect was involved in the plot. Others in custody include the alleged gunman, the driver of the car that brought him to the scene and the person who provided the shooter with the gun.

Local media reporters that the new suspect was identified using surveillance cameras around the scene of the attack.

The suspect will appear Friday before a judge who will determine the charges against him.

The other suspects have been charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms. A fifth suspect is on the run.

The shooter is believed to belong to a network of contract killers. According to the magazine Semana, published on Saturday, he told investigators he was offered more than $4,800 to complete the hit.

Uribe's attorney Victor Mosquera said the probe had revealed a "structured organization" with a "history of attacks on right-wing leaders" was likely to have ordered the shooting.

Uribe, a member of the Democratic Center party of former right-wing president Alvaro Uribe (no relation), announced his intention to run in the May 2026 presidential election last October.

He is the son of Diana Turbay, a famed journalist who was killed after being kidnapped by Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel, and grandson of Julio Cesar Turbay, who led Colombia from 1978 to 1982.
