55 lakh families to get 30kgs rice at Tk 15 per kg from August: food adviser

DHAKA, July 15, 2025 (BSS) – Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder today said food friendly programme will begin from August and each of 55 lakh low-income families will get 30kgs rice every month at Tk 15 per kg.

The programme will continue for six months this year instead of five months last year. 

In the first phase, the programme will continue from August to November and after a break from December this year to January next year (2026), it will take up again from February to March,” he said.

The decision was taken in a meeting of food policy and monitoring committee (FPMC) meeting held at the Cabinet Division conference room in the secretariat here.

About the overall food situation, the food adviser said the present food stock is very much satisfactory. Even then the government has taken advance preparation considering the flood situation aiming to ensure food security, he added. 

As part of the preparation, the government will import four lakh tonnes of rice through international tender. 

Besides, the government has asked the commerce ministry to take necessary initiative for importing five lakh tonnes of rice through the private sector.

FPMC president and adviser to the finance and science and technology ministries Dr Salehuddin Ahmed presided over the meeting. Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder and other members of the committee were present.
