Youths must lead cancer awareness campaigns - KU VC

KHULNA, July 21, 2025 (BSS) - Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Khulna University (KU) Professor Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim today underscored the importance of early detection of cancer, terming it a deadly disease with costly treatments.

"Due to a lack of awareness, most patients fail to detect cancer at an early stage, leading to immense suffering. Early diagnosis is vital for prevention and control," he said while addressing a cancer awareness workshop as the chief guest at the Liaquat Ali Auditorium of KU.

The event was jointly organized by the Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE) Discipline of Khulna University, Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU), and the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Dhaka University.

Highlighting the role of youth in creating social awareness, the VC said, "The youth have the power to bring change, Engaging university students in health awareness programmes are essential."

Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Harunur Rashid Khan, Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Nurunnabi, and Dean of the School of Life Science Professor Dr. Md. Golam Hossain addressed the function as special guests.

The workshop was presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Mursalin Billah, Head of the BGE Discipline, while the welcome address was delivered by Professor Dr. Sabina Yasmin of Dhaka University.

Following the inauguration, Associate Professor Dr. Mushtaq Ibne Ayub of Dhaka University presented the keynote paper, focusing on the scientific perspective of cancer, its rising prevalence among women, and strategies to enhance awareness.
