
CHATTOGRAM, Dec 2, 2025 ( BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter has put importance on regional and global collaboration to tackle the crisis stemming from illegal and uncontrolled fishing from seas.
“The marine resources also were impacted by the adverse affect of climate change as such problems cannot be dealt by any single country,” she added.
While speaking as the chief guest at an international conference, she also called upon to ensure effective good governance and scientific management for the sustainable maritime development, execution of blue economic strategy keeping into account the growing importance of oceans in the backdrop of global climate changes.
The Institute of Marine Science, Chattogram University organized the 4-day long international conference on “ Marine Fisheries and Blue Innovations: Safeguarding Ocean Harmony” with the key-theme of “ Safeguarding Ocean Harmony” .
The Adviser attended as chief guest at the 2nd day of 4-day conference being held at a local hotel in the city.
CU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md Yahiya Akhter made welcome address while Prof. Dr. Pierre Failler of Portsmouth Business School , UK presented the keynote titled “ Execution of Global Blue Economy: Challenges , Experiences and Strategic Insight for Bangladesh”.
DG of Directorate of Fisheries Dr. Md Abdur Rauf , CU Pro-VC ( Academic ) Prof. Dr. Shamim Uddin Khan and Pro VC ( Administration) Prof. Dr. Md Kamal Uddin , Director of CU Institute of Marine Sciences Dr. Sk Aftab Uddin Akmed spoke at the seminar as special guests.
At least 200 researchers, scientist, student and representatives of public and private organizations from home and abroad that included USA, Russia , UK, China , India , Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been participating the conference split into 7 sub-themes on issues like climate change , sustainable marine management and future fisheries management plans.
Speaking the function, Farida Akhter said scope has created to develop and formulate a sustainable future maritime management strategy in coordination with scientific policy formulation and community development following fixing of Blue Economy as national priority.
Though Bangladesh has achieved remarkable success in fish production, the adviser said “It is utmost imperative to ensure reasonable fishing, technological innovation , effective good governance and science-based policy formulation for sustainable future in maritime management.
Referring the EAF-Nansen Programme 2025 survey findings, Farida Akhter said that stock of small fish species in Bay of Bengle has reduced to 33,811 MT from 1,58,000 MT indicating reduction of 78.6% percentage point in last seven years.
“ Lessening of big hunter fish which resulted in rapid increase to the jellyfish has poses a serious threat to the ecological balance” the Adviser observed saying that “ time has come to address urgently the maintaining ecosystem of Bay of Bengle”.
Fisheries and Livestock Adviser said that the country has abundant number of very efficient researchers and scientists and laid emphasis on preservation of ecosystem, formulation of long-time maritime policy and climate resilient fisheries management.
