DHAKA, Dec 3, 2025 (BSS) - National Citizen Party (NCP) today received its official registration certificate from the Election Commission (EC) at the commission's headquarters in Agargaon.
NCP Convener Nahid Islam received the certificate from EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin in the evening.
The party's Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, Joint Convener Khaled Saifullah and Joint Member Secretary Zahirul Islam Musa were also present.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Nahid said EC should announce the election schedule in consideration of the current political situation, as it has not yet given a clear timeframe and only indicated that the announcement may come within one to two weeks.
Expressing reservations about the EC's institutional capacity, he alleged that several officials previously accused of corruption remain in service. He said the NCP has provided the EC with relevant information and called for strict vigilance and corrective measures.
"We want the electoral process to proceed smoothly. Holding a free and fair election on time is the highest priority, and the NCP will fully cooperate," he said. "But if the commission shows bias, we will be forced to withdraw confidence and take a firm stance."
Nahid also said concerns persist over the appointment process of deputy commissioners (DCs) and superintendents of police (SPs), as opaque and vulnerable to political influence. He urged the EC to ensure that neutral officials are positioned in key posts ahead of the polls.
He welcomed the proposed reforms on political symbols and multiparty practice, saying every party must be able to contest with its own symbol and identity. Even within alliances, he said, partners should retain their respective symbols.
He alleged that one party is pressuring the government, the EC and various institutions to overturn the reform and allow alliance members to run under a single symbol. When this was not achieved politically, efforts were made to challenge the reform through a writ petition in court, he added.
