DHAKA, Dec 9, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today issued a message on the occasion of International Human Rights Day-2025, observed in Bangladesh tomorrow with the theme "Our Everyday Essentials."
In his message, Professor Yunus reaffirmed the country's commitment to upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Charter.
Highlighting Bangladesh's progress, the Chief Adviser noted that the nation is celebrating the day about a year and a half after the historic youth-led 'July Uprising,' which saw people from all walks of life rise against oppression and tyranny in pursuit of dignity and human rights.
"A 'New Bangladesh' has emerged from this tumultuous period. We are preparing to hold a democratic, free, and fair general election in early February 2026, advancing our path toward a just and equal society," he said.
Professor Yunus also pointed to the recent verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal-Bangladesh, which convicted members of the deposed regime of crimes against humanity connected to the July Uprising, as a demonstration of the country's commitment to justice.
The Chief Adviser highlighted Bangladesh's adherence to international human rights norms, including accession to all nine core human rights treaties, the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture, and all core ILO conventions. "We remain dedicated to labour rights and ethical workplace practices," he said.
Bangladesh continues to play an active role globally as a member of the Human Rights Council, addressing emerging challenges such as conflicts, humanitarian crises, climate change, and forced displacement.
The country also continues advocating for the rights of persecuted Rohingyas and providing them temporary shelter, while raising awareness at international forums, including the UN High-level Conference on September 30, 2025.
Professor Yunus further reiterated Bangladesh's condemnation of human rights violations worldwide, including in Gaza, and affirmed solidarity with the people of Palestine in their struggle for statehood, justice, and freedom.
The Chief Adviser called for human rights to be promoted as an article of faith to assert the dignity of every human life and pledged to continue working with international partners and the UN to strengthen national human rights protections and advance global human rights standards.
