DHAKA, Dec 11, 2025 (BSS)- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the coming national election along with a referendum on February 12, 2026 will be considered as a significant event in the country's history.
He said, "We undoubtedly consider the simultaneous holding of the national parliamentary election and the referendum to be a major and notable event in the political history of Bangladesh."
Fakhrul made the remarks in an immediate reaction following announcement of the schedule for the 13th National Parliamentary Election by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) this evening.
Mirza Fakhrul said, "The CEC's address to the nation proved that the Election Commission, the government and the political parties want to hold the election and ensure the people's right to vote."
"We are generally satisfied with the election schedule that has been announced. There might be slight differences in wording, but I do not consider those issues to be very significant,” he said.
"It is the responsibility of the Election Commission to execute and conduct this process properly. Our expectation is that the Election Commission will conduct an absolutely neutral, fair, free, and acceptable election,” he added.
The BNP Secretary General remarked, "For the last fifteen years democracy has been destroyed in this country, and elections have been made a farce. Therefore, a new opportunity has arisen today. Through a mass uprising of students and the public, we will be able to form a truly representative parliament through this new election."
He informed that extensive discussions had been held over the past nine months regarding the necessary reforms of the state. He noted that political parties have agreed on some issues, but those on which consensus could not be reached would be put to a referendum.
When asked about potential misunderstandings with the political allies on fielding candidate he said, "We have no such problems. It’s common within the political parties. We have not finalized the candidate list yet.”
"Those who participated in the movements will be properly evaluated. There will be no issues... everyone will cooperate in holding a neutral election, upholding the spirit of democracy,” he said.
Regarding the system of holding the referendum and the national election on the same day with a 'yes' or 'no' vote on four questions, he admitted, "There will undoubtedly be some challenges. There is no doubt about that. However, if we all work together on these issues, we will be able to address the issue."
Recalling his days in prison the BNP secretary general said, "It is undoubtedly a very happy day... I have always told that we are not afraid of contesting in the election, the election must be held to establish the voting rights of the people."
