RAJSHAHI, Jan 31, 2026 (BSS)- A day-long bird fair was held today at Rajshahi University (RU) here with the theme "Watch Birds, Love Birds, Protect Birds".

The fair took place at the university's Shaheed Buddhijibi Square from 9:00 am to evening. 

RU Bird Conservation Club with the support of the Department of Zoology organized the fair while two organisations-- Birdshahi and Valent Tech Limited-- provided assistance for it.   

The programme featured a bird-watching competition, a bird drawing  competition, an exhibition of bird photographs, prize distribution, and other  activities.  

Among those present were Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Khan,  hairman of the Department of Zoology Prof Md. Nazrul Islam, Prof of the  Department Aminuzzaman Md. Saleh Reza, Administrator of the Public Relations  Office Prof Md. Akhtar Hossain Majumder, along with other concerned  officials.   

It is worth mentioning that the RU Bird Conservation Club has been organising  the fair regularly since 2012.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Nazrul Islam called for immediate measures to  protect the migratory birds and their habitats from pollution.    

He also stressed the importance of strengthening existing laws against bird  hunting and poaching, and increasing the involvement of local administration  to catch poachers.    

In his remarks, bird specialist Prof Aminuzzaman Saleh Reza highlighted the  crucial role that migratory birds play in natural balance, such as insect and  seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, and pollination.    

There is a strong call for creating safe havens and gardens with adequate  security to ensure the survival and breeding of migratory birds.    

Prof Farid Uddin Khan called for highlighting the impact of light and plastic  pollution on migratory birds and their habitats; and protecting nature and  natural resources through adopting time-befitting and effective measures for  conservation of biodiversity.  

He underlined the need for creating gardens with adequate protection and  security for migratory birds to ensure their safe living and breeding.    

Out of about 710 species of birds including resident and migratory birds in  Bangladesh, 650 species of birds have been included in the schedule of  Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, Prof Farid Uddin Khan added.   

The Birds which migrate from one place to another during a certain time of  the year are known as migratory birds. These creatures play a significant  role in maintaining ecological equilibrium.
