DHAKA, July 1, 2026 (BSS) - BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Adviser to the Prime Minister Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Wednesday stressed the need to firmly establish justice in line with the country's social values, history and traditions.
"The concept of justice rooted in our society, history and traditions must be well established. Young lawyers, in particular, have a significant responsibility in achieving this," he said.
Rizvi was speaking as the chief guest at a reception organised by the Kushtia Islamic University Law Alumni Association at the Supreme Court Bar Association's Shaheed Safiur Rahman Auditorium. The programme honoured Advocate Mohammad Ali on his election as Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
Criticising the fallen Awami League government led by fascist Sheikh Hasina, Rizvi said that judicial independence had been undermined.
"During Sheikh Hasina's tenure, court verdicts came from the Prime Minister's Office and the Attorney General's pen. That situation cannot continue. Justice must be delivered independently," he said.
Referring to the repression during the past 17 years, Rizvi said many lawyers had faced persecution under the previous government.
He praised members of the legal profession for their role in defending democracy, claiming their efforts had contributed to weakening the Hasina administration.
Highlighting the current government's efforts to strengthen the rule of law, Rizvi said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had consistently advocated good governance and judicial independence.
"Our Prime Minister has long struggled and spoken out for good governance and the establishment of the rule of law. I see the reflection of that commitment in every action of the Prime Minister," he said.
Among others, BNP Law Affairs Secretary Barrister Badruddoza Badal, Volunteer Affairs Secretary Mir Sarfat Ali Sapu, Supreme Court Bar Association President Barrister A.M. Mahbub Uddin Khokon MP, Kushtia Islamic University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.K.M. Matinur Rahman, Islamic Arabic University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Jafar Khan and Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Rais Uddin addressed the programme as special guests.
