KHULNA, Aug 2, 2026 (BSS) - The 165th birth anniversary of eminent scientist Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy was celebrated today at his ancestral home in Raruli village of Paikgacha upazila with a day-long programme featuring floral tributes, a documentary screening, a science and innovation fair, a discussion and the distribution of tree saplings and prizes.

Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md. Abdullah Harun attended the event as the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, he described Acharya Roy as not only a pioneering scientist but also a successful entrepreneur, educator and social reformer. 

He said that despite opportunities to teach and conduct research abroad, Roy chose to return home and devoted his life to the welfare of the country, placing national interests above personal comfort.

The divisional commissioner stressed the importance of preserving Roy's legacy and developing his birthplace as a site of historical significance. He also called for greater public awareness and local initiatives to promote the renowned scientist's contributions at home and abroad.

The programme was chaired by Khulna Deputy Commissioner Hoore Jannat.

Among those who addressed the discussion were Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Kaniz Fatema Liza, Assistant Superintendent of Police (D-Circle) Md. Amir Hamza, Regional Director of the Department of Archaeology Md. Mahidul Islam, Assistant Professor Md. Abdul Momin Sana, former Freedom Fighters' Commander Bir Muktijoddha Md. Ruhul Amin, Paikgacha BNP Convener Dr. Abdul Majid, Raruli Union Panel Chairman Abul Hashem, senior journalist Sheikh Didarul Alam, PC Roy Smriti Sangsad Vice-President Dr. Md. Harun-or-Rashid, and Bhuvan Mohini Government Primary School Head Teacher Gautam Kumar Roy.

Paikgacha UNO Wasiyuzzaman Chowdhury delivered the welcome address.

The programme was organised by the Khulna district administration with support from the Paikgacha upazila administration and Raruli Union Parishad.

Earlier, guests and representatives of the district and upazila administrations, freedom fighters, BNP leaders and activists, and educational institutions placed floral wreaths at Acharya Roy's portrait.
