PM to inaugurate construction of flood control dam in Feni next month: Anee

FENI, Aug 25, 2026 (BSS) – Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has said construction of the Muhuri-Kohua Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Project will begin soon involving Tk 1,543 crore.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to inaugurate the construction work on the project next month, he said while visiting the dam site at Parshuram here this afternoon.

Anee said, “We will start construction of the flood control, drainage and irrigation project as the region remains submerged almost every year due to the opening or breaching of dams in the neighbouring country.”

Referring to the devastating floods in 2024, the Water Resources Minister said, “We faced a devastating situation at that time. Many people suffered immensely and scores of people died.”

The existing dams in the area are dilapidated, he said, adding, “So, we have undertaken a coordinated project titled ‘Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Project’, also known as the Muhuri-Kohua River Dam Project.”

Construction of the project will begin this year and be completed by 2030, he told the gathering.

Local lawmakers Munshi Rafiqul Alam Maznu and Rehana Akter Ranu from reserved women’s seat-21, Chief Engineer of the Cumilla region Abu Bakar Siddique, Deputy Commissioner Manira Huque, District Council Administrator Professor MA Khaleque, BNP National Executive Committee members Abu Taleb and Mashiur Rahman Biplob, District BNP Convener Sheikh Farid Bahar and Member Secretary Alal Uddin Alal, among others, accompanied the minister during the visit.
